Fulham defense gets new Halliche on life

25 August 2010

Fulham completed a transfer swoop for Algerian defender Rafik Halliche, giving the Cottagers a cheap, youthful addition to their central defense corps at one-eighth the cost of Chris Smalling, who they sold to Manchester United last season.

Halliche impressed at the World Cup for the Africans, especially against England, and could see a debut as early as this afternoon, when Fulham hosts League 2 side Port Vale in a second-round Carling Cup match.

With the Europa League not part of the equation this season, Fulham should take the Carling Cup more seriously than last year, when they did everything but field a squad of U-12 girls against Manchester City in a desperate attempt to crash out of the campaign’s least meaningful competition. Of course, given Fulham’s form at Eastlands, it still took Jake’s Billion-Dollar Men extra time to subdue the Cottagers.

This time around, Fulham should be able to field a pretty strong side, as multiple players are champing at the bit to get starters’ minutes that may not be available in Premiership play. I’ll chime back in tomorrow with a brief recap after an (assumed) Fulham victory at the Cottage.
