Sound and fury signifying nothing

31 August 2010

In the end, after much speculation, the transfer deadline was far less exciting than my afternoon, during which my 3-year-old decided to vomit repeatedly on me and various parts of my car and the house. (And no, that wasn’t his reaction to the U.S. rehiring Bob Bradley for four more years.)

The sale of Paul Konchesky to Liverpool went through, with the Cottagers doing quite well in getting back some cash and two solid prospects. Deals for Roque Santa Cruz and others could not be consummated and Eidur Gudjohnsen went back on his going back on Stoke, inking with the Potters on loan.

Also, with reports having David Stockdale potentially out for a couple of months, there was no way Fulham could afford to sell Mark Schwarzer once Shay Given and his shoulder “decided” to stay at Man City and pursue Carling Cup glory. The Cottagers actually may have added a keeper, with reports indicating that they may have bagged backup Roma keeper Doni on a season-long loan. That move potentially opens the door for Schwarzer to move in Janaury’s window, should Stockdale be healthy and Fulham be in a position where they can give Stockdale the job for half a season with minimal risk of disaster.

In the end, Fulham still did pretty well this month. The Cottagers added Dembele, Salcido and Halliche, plus the two Liverpool prospects, and only paid a net of around 6-7 million pounds in transfer fees. Given Hughes was told he had a 15 million transfer war chest when he was hired, Fulham very well may be back in business come mid-winter.

As for the rest of the league, I thought Birmingham, Stoke and Blackpool did nicely and should be stronger in the months ahead. I’m not sure Liverpool fans can be real happy with what Roy Hodgson accomplished.

Given Spurs leaky defense (excuse me, defence), I am very pleased with the Van der Vaart signing. Of course, getting Cudicini to learn how to extend his arms would help also.
